FESTIVE FELTING

FESTIVE FELTING

Over the course of three weeks you will be guided in the making of your own felt, and the creation of a collection of festive brooches and a leaf and bauble bracelet. Using machine embroidery or hand stitching we will embellish to add texture, colour and sparkle; learn how to add a cotton backing and brooch fasteners; discover how to make and attach a ball and loop closure, and create handmade stemmed leaves and felt baubles and beads.

Beginners may need to order materials, to allow time for delivery please book your place by 25 November. A full list of materials needed for the course, including where to source merino wool, will be available at time of booking.

Make your own festive gifts for family and friends this Christmas. This project is suitable for beginners.

Festive felt brooches
The foundation for these brooches will be formed by making some pre felt pieces guided by our online tutor Jacki Sleator. We will combine our pre felts and full to make solid felt. Using machine embroidery or hand stitching we will embellish to add, texture, colour and sparkle. Finish each brooch in your own time by adding a cotton fabric backing and brooch fastener. (Makes 6).

Materials

100g Merino wool in contrasting colours
1m Bubble wrap
1m Thin plastic dust cover
1m length of insulation piping Homebase B&Q
Old bath towel for layout
Small hand towel to dry hands
Scraps of bubble wrap
Olive oil soap Holland & Barrett, TK Maxx or any hand soap
Large spoon
Hot and cold water
Ball brauser or 2L empty milk carton with fine holes punched in top
Large plastic jug
Large bowl or small basin
Large rubber bands or old pop socks to tie
Sewing machine (optional)
Machine embroidery thread (optional)
Small scissors
Backing or lining fabric (optional)

Festive leaf and bauble bracelet
Under the guidance of our online tutor Jacki Sleator we will layout wool fibres and felt to make a strong cuff to fit. We will discover how to make and attach a ball and loop closure. We will then create handmade stemmed leaves and embellish with felt baubles and beads.
