This week ISLAND Arts Virtual Gallery features Stephen Dow the artist behind heraldBLACK. The Hackney based printmaker and artist is originally from Northern Ireland and graduated from the Belfast School of Art in 1997.
View the video of Stephen discuses examples of his processes and techniques.
Stephen worked first as a textile print assistant with John Rocha in Dublin, followed by over 10 years working with Habitat and The Conran Shop. He now specialises in unique monoprints as well as card & poster ranges. His work has recently been selected by Habitat, Anthropologie, Pringle of Scotland & Little, Brown Book Group. and has featured in Vogue.
The poster and card ranges available from heraldblack are accessible pieces of work. These are reproductions of hand made prints & collages which are then layered and
recoloured to make a new piece of work that differs from the original.
Dow takes inspiration from his surroundings & environment when making work, alternating between architectural and botanical references resulting in two quite different styles; constructed and sculptural versus organic and fluid.
Stephen's making process is documented on his Instagram profile @heraldblack #heraldblackprocess. Learn more about the artist and his work HERE.
