"The Pastel Society of Ireland was founded in 1988. Prior to this, pastellists could exhibit their work as members of the Ulster Watercolour Society. However, determined to realise their dream of giving the medium the recognition it deserved, a small dedicated group of pastellists, led by Sam Mateer, a talented artist and teacher, decided to establish a Pastel Society, one which would encompass fellow artists from the whole of Ireland. The First Annual Exhibition of the Pastel Society of Ireland was held in the autumn of 1988.

"This year, our 31st Annual Exhibition has been cancelled, thanks to COVID-19, but extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. In partnership with ISLAND Arts we present our virtual exhibition 2020 - a collection of 54 works, from 22 of our members. During the run of the exhibition, via social media ISLAND Arts shall highlight an artist of the day by showing their work, which is also included within the overall exhibition. I hope you enjoy the exhibition."
