March 9, 2026

ISLAND Arts Centre is delighted to launch a Plein Air Weekend this April, in various locations across the Lisburn and Castlereagh Council area. In this painting and drawing event, patrons will experience, capture and celebrate the natural beauty of our local, great outdoors.

From 9th – 11th April, guests artist tutors from the Royal Ulster Academy will lead workshops that patrons can avail of in order to kick start their day of creativity in the open air. On Thursday 9th April, Paul Jordan will take a workshop in Wallace Park, Lisburn. On Friday 10th April, Paul Walls will be providing the workshop in Castle Gardens, Lisburn. And finally, Rosie McGurran will be leading that day’s workshop at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens on Saturday 11th April. All of these stunning locations will no doubt inspire some beautiful masterpieces amongst those taking part.

Head of Hillsborough Castle, Caroline Walker has said: “Hillsborough Castle is delighted to host this special outdoor painting workshop, inviting participants to immerse themselves in creativity within our beautiful grounds. The castle and gardens should provide an inspirational setting — a place where history and landscape combine to spark imagination. We are proud that this event forms part of a wider programme delivered by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, celebrating the value of the arts and the great outdoors across the region. By bringing people together in such a unique setting, we hope to inspire new perspectives and showcase the rich heritage that makes this area so special.”

Co-Ordinator of the project, artist Noelle McAlinden explains the initiative - “it is a pleasure collaborating with ISLAND Arts Centre for this the Inaugural Plein Air Painting & Drawing weekend, bringing such distinguished artists & new audiences to such inspiring venues in Lisburn & Castlereagh Council Area. All three artists are renowned for their Plein Air Painting skills, Antrim born and based, Paul Jordan, alongside Paul Walls & Rosie Mc Gurran, Royal Ulster Academicians. Each have their own unique style & will lead & demonstrate their own way of recording the beauty of the landscape around them.”

Participants whether experienced or absolute beginners are in for a treat. The opportunity to capture the beauty and the luxurious gardens, waterways & landscapes, under the guidance of such distinguished artists, is very special. An opportunity to embrace the outdoors, in all its beauty & capture something quite unique. Whether participants choose to take part in one, two or all three days, it is a wonderful opportunity to seek sanctuary in the landscape, invest in their own creativity, self-expression & health. We know first-hand the power of the arts upon our wellbeing & mental health. This is no doubt an excellent opportunity to seek solace & inspiration & support cultural tourism. Whether you are local or choosing to travel & rest, play & stay here. The welcome is warm & the inspiration is infinite.

Chair of Communities and Wellbeing for Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Tim Mitchell states that “it is wonderful to be able to deliver such an inspiring and exciting event as part of our Arts Service. At this time of year, these sites across the council area start to come to life with the beauty of spring and will undoubtedly inspire some fantastic artwork. I hope this is the first of many Plein Air events to take place.”
